Ghanaian Afrobeats star King Promise has drawn heavy criticism online after a viral video in which he stated that Lagos, Nigeria, is “bigger than the whole of Ghana.”  The comment emerged during a conversation with Nigerian streamer Peller in Accra and has sparked widespread debate around geography, identity and social media influence.

The Controversial Statement

In the video, King Promise remarked:

“The whole of Ghana is not bigger than Lagos. Lagos is bigger than the whole of Ghana, and it’s not even the capital of Nigeria.”

He claimed that Ghana’s population was around 24 million, and Nigeria’s about 300 million — figures which many online users quickly dismissed as inaccurate.

The Data Check

According to fact-checking sources:

  • Ghana’s land area is approximately 238,540 square kilometres, while Lagos State covers only about 3,577 sq km.
  • Ghana’s population is estimated at roughly 30.83 million as of the 2021 census, with projections nearing 33–34 million in 2025.
  • Lagos State has an estimated population of around 22 million, depending on source, and a land area far smaller than Ghana.
In other words: Ghana is far larger in both land size and — depending on estimates — comparable in population size to Lagos, making King Promise’s claim incorrect.

Reaction on Social Media

The comments ignited a wave of backlash on platforms like X (formerly Twitter):

“Bro is still holding on to the social studies he was taught in 2013,” one user wrote.

Another added:

“The ignorance on display is staggering.”

Many Ghanaians used the moment to correct the facts, pointing out the difference between landmass and population size, and cautioning public figures on making sweeping claims without verification.

Why This Matters

  • Public figures & accuracy: As a celebrated artist with a large following, King Promise’s statement underscores how easily misinformation can spread when made by influential personalities.
  • National pride & perception: The topic touches on Ghana-Nigeria comparisons that are often emotionally charged. Even if the claim was meant metaphorically (about influence rather than physical size), many interpreted it as dismissive of Ghana.
  • Data literacy: The incident highlights the importance of distinguishing between different metrics — for example, “size” may refer to land area, population, economic output, or cultural influence. Failure to clarify this can lead to misinterpretation.

King Promise Responds?

At the time of writing, it was not clear if King Promise has issued a formal clarification or apology regarding the clip. The controversy continues to circulate across social media, spawning memes and debate.
