Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi, is currently under investigation by Ghana’s Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) for serious criminal allegations. According to Deputy Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Justice Srem-Sai, the charges include fraud, causing financial loss to the state, and money laundering.
In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), Dr. Srem-Sai confirmed that EOCO is actively working on the case and that asset recovery processes have also begun to prevent the dissipation of suspected illicit wealth.
Two-Pronged Probe Includes International Criminal Syndicate Links
Beyond the domestic inquiry, Dr. Srem-Sai disclosed that Chairman Wontumi is also the subject of an international investigation involving a global organised crime network. Ghanaian law enforcement is said to be collaborating with international partners to track and assess the wider implications of the case.
“The suspect is also under a second strand of investigation which is part of a larger international organised crime scheme,” the Deputy Attorney General stated.
This marks one of the most high-profile criminal investigations against a senior political figure in recent years.

Asset Recovery Moves Underway
Authorities have initiated asset recovery proceedings aimed at freezing or reclaiming property believed to be proceeds of crime.
“The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) is assiduously working with our international law enforcement partners… to prevent further dissipation of what law enforcement agencies strongly suspect to be proceeds of crime,” said Dr. Srem-Sai.
Political Reactions and Allegations of Targeting
Chairman Wontumi, known for his loyal service to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and his strong influence in the Ashanti Region, has long been a central figure in Ghana’s political landscape. His presence in party campaigns and national events has made him both a political powerhouse and a lightning rod for controversy.
Following the announcement, some NPP lawmakers have denounced the move as a politically motivated attempt by President Mahama’s administration to weaken the opposition ahead of the 2028 general elections.
