Former Ghanaian footballer turned coach, Joseph Baah, has shared a compelling story of how his football journey led him to embrace Buddhism during his time playing in Bhutan.

While playing for FC Terton in the Himalayan kingdom, Baah made the surprising decision to convert from Christianity to Buddhism—a move he says helped him gain the trust and acceptance of his teammates.

In an interview on the Gajio Podcast on YouTube, Baah opened up about the experience:

“I’m a Christian, but I became a Buddhist when I went to Bhutan. How else would they like you? I wanted the team and the environment I was in to love and trust me. I had heard about Buddha in Ghana, so it wasn’t new to me.”

He spoke with admiration about Bhutan, a peaceful Buddhist nation nestled between India and China, and how its values deeply resonated with him.

“After one or two weeks, I realised they were genuine people. In Bhutan, nobody steals. If someone finds something, they take it to the police. The crime rate is very low. I wanted to be a part of that. I would return to Christianity, but I cherished the experience.”

Baah also highlighted the common moral teachings shared across major religions:

“It’s just like Christianity. They have places of worship and monks who guide you—teaching what to do and what not to do. The values are the same as Christianity and Islam: don’t steal, don’t speak ill of others. It’s all about living a good life.”

Baah’s time in Bhutan came toward the end of his football career, which was ultimately cut short by recurring knee injuries in the 2019/2020 season.

Today, the former Ghanaian footballer, Baah continues to inspire the next generation as head coach of Jonina Ladies, a team competing in the Southern Zone of the Ghana Women’s Premier League.
