Mahama education fund for helicopter crash victims’ children

President John Dramani Mahama has announced the creation of a dedicated Education Fund to support the children of the eight victims who lost their lives in the devastating August 6 military helicopter crash.

The announcement was made during the funeral rites (Adua) of Alhaji Mohammed Muniru Limuna, the deceased Deputy National Security Coordinator, held on Tuesday. President Mahama expressed deep concern for the children left behind—some of whom are still in school or are as young as two months old—emphasizing the need to safeguard their future.

“There will be a state funeral on Friday, August 15. At the funeral, we will announce some programmes for creating a fund that will assist with the education of the children,” he stated. “[The fund will help] shield the children from the financial and emotional hardships brought about by their tragic loss.”

President Mahama revealed that the fund will be officially launched during a state funeral ceremony at Black Star Square on Friday, August 15—a solemn occasion that underscores the nation’s collective mourning and resolve to act.

This fund is positioned as part of his broader “reset agenda”—a commitment to national renewal and progress, which the President said will continue in memory of the victims.

Helping the Youngest Victims

Among those affected is the two-month-old infant of Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, who perished in the crash. President Mahama highlighted the urgency of supporting these young dependents:

“Some of the victims’ children were still in school, with one as young as two months old… The reset agenda must be successful in their memory so that their deaths will not have been in vain.”

By launching the Education Fund at the state funeral, the government creates a platform for philanthropic contributions and national solidarity.

Helicopter Crash: A National Tragedy

The tragic accident occurred on August 6, 2025, when a Ghana Air Force Harbin Z-9 helicopter crashed in the Ashanti Region, killing eight high-ranking officials and personnel—including the Defence and Environment Ministers, and security chiefs.

The crash marked one of the most devastating air disasters in modern Ghanaian history and triggered widespread grief and national mourning.

A Lasting Legacy for Fallen Heroes

Beyond the emotional toll, the Education Fund represents a commitment to the long-term well-being and empowerment of the victims’ children. It will likely provide scholarships, school supplies, and education-related support.

President Mahama’s announcement reflects a thoughtful strategy to transform tragedy into a legacy of compassionate governance.
