The boxing community is in shock after the tragic loss of Nigerian boxer Olanrewaju ‘Success’ Segun, a former National and West African light-heavyweight champion, who collapsed and died during a match against Ghanaian fighter Jon Mbanugu at the Bukom Boxing Arena on the evening of March 29, 2025.

Segun, a 40-year-old veteran, was participating in an undercard bout for Ghana’s Professional Boxing League’s Fight Night 15 when the unimaginable happened.

Known for his powerful punches and unwavering determination, Segun had been ahead on points in a competitive, yet friendly, contest against Mbanugu, nicknamed “Power,” an up-and-coming star in Ghanaian boxing.

Footage circulating online captures the haunting moment: after a series of punches, Segun staggered and suddenly collapsed to the canvas, his body limp as he hit the ground.

The referee quickly stopped the fight, signaling for medical assistance as the timekeeper and bellman initially mistook the collapse for a knockdown.

It soon became clear that this was no ordinary fall.

Medical teams rushed into the ring, performing urgent procedures to revive Segun.

He was stretchered out of the arena and rushed to Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, but despite all efforts, he was pronounced dead shortly after arriving.

Early reports suggest a possible cardiac arrest, though the official cause of death is still awaiting confirmation from the Ghana Boxing Authority.

Born in Lagos, Nigeria, Segun had an impressive boxing career, recording 13 wins—12 by knockout—out of 23 professional fights, according to BoxRec.

His career highlights included winning both the National and West African light-heavyweight titles, earning him a respected reputation in Nigerian and regional boxing. However, recent years had been difficult for Segun, as he entered the match with four consecutive losses.

Despite his recent struggles, Segun was still a beloved figure, known for his powerful knockout ability and unrelenting spirit that once made him a dominant force in the ring.

The Bukom Boxing Arena, a renowned venue in Accra’s Jamestown district, became the site of an unexpected tragedy that night.

Opened in 2016 as Ghana’s first purpose-built boxing facility, the arena has long been a hub for the nation’s boxing pride, hosting events that attract passionate crowds.

That night, however, the atmosphere shifted from excitement to disbelief as spectators watched the events unfold, many expressing their shock and sadness on social media.

The video, shared by Fight Gist Media, captures the exchange of blows before Segun’s sudden collapse, a chilling image now forever etched into the memories of boxing fans.
