Petr Pavel, President of the Czech Republic, alongside Ghana’s Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has officially commissioned a state-of-the-art 40-bed district hospital in Kpone, located in the Greater Accra Region.
The Czech-funded facility is expected to significantly boost healthcare delivery for residents within the Kpone Municipality. The inauguration ceremony, held on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, brought together high-profile dignitaries including traditional leaders such as Nii Tetteh Otu II (Paramount Chief of Kpone), Nii Tetteh Oglie II (Chief of Nmlitsakpo), and Tatse Nii Laryea Akuetteh X (Chief of Katamanso), as well as MP for Kpone-Katamanso Joseph Akuerteh Tetteh, and officials from the Ministry of Health, Ghana Health Service, and Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council.
About the new built hospital
The hospital project was financed through a €71.5 million facility secured from Erste Group Bank AG and Česká Spořitelna a.s., backed by an €8.6 million export credit guarantee from EGAP, the Czech Republic’s Export Guarantee and Insurance Corporation.
Construction was handled by VAMED Health Projects CZ s.r.o. as part of a broader health infrastructure initiative launched in 2020 to build 12 new hospitals across the country.
Other sites benefiting from the initiative include Jumapo, Nkwatia, Kwabeng, Achiase, and Adukrom in the Eastern Region; Suame, Drobonso, Sabronum, Manso Nkwanta, and Twedie in the Ashanti Region; and Mim in the Ahafo Region.
According to the Ministry of Health, five of the Eastern Region hospitals have already been handed over, with completed facilities in the Ashanti and Ahafo Regions set to open soon.
The Kpone Municipal Hospital features modern amenities, including an Outpatient Department with a Public Health Wing, a Surgical Suite with an operating theatre and recovery area, a Delivery Unit with a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, a Laboratory, Pharmacy, X-ray services, male, female, and pediatric wards, and a Services Block with laundry, stores, and cold storage. Staff offices and on-site accommodation are also included.
The facility comes fully equipped with modern medical equipment, a one-year post-construction maintenance plan, and staff training aimed at ensuring high-quality service delivery.
How will the new facility help Ghanaians?
In his remarks, President Pavel described the hospital as a “gift to humanity,” saying, “There’s nothing more universally meaningful than opening a hospital to serve people in need.” He urged hospital staff to offer every patient the highest standard of care.
Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh called the project a continuation of healthcare initiatives started under former President. “This hospital is one of 12 completed under the previous administration, in line with efforts to increase access to quality healthcare,” he noted.

He condemned the politicization of healthcare infrastructure and introduced the government’s Free Primary Healthcare Initiative, which aims to remove financial barriers to essential services. “Our investment in facilities like this reflects our commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals and Universal Health Coverage,” he added.
Akandoh also highlighted progress in national health indicators, citing a drop in maternal mortality from 580 per 100,000 live births in 2007 to 310 in 2017, and under-five mortality from 111 per 1,000 in 2003 to 56 in 2017. However, he acknowledged more work remains and urged local stakeholders to maintain the facility and use it responsibly.
Professor Samuel Kaba Akoriyea, Acting Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, emphasized the hospital’s role in emergency care and disaster response. He added that it would also generate employment and stimulate local economic activity.
Greater Accra Regional Minister Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo hailed the project as a major milestone for both the municipality and the region. “This facility significantly improves healthcare access and strengthens our regional health infrastructure,” she said.
